On trying new things

There’s been a lot of buzz around using Facebook Groups to get around the dropping organic reach on the News Feed, so The Question on Many Marketers’ Minds: Should My Brand Start a Facebook Group? Nick Nelson walks through it on the Top Rank Marketing blog.

The bottom line?

“. . .these spaces are really more about fostering and evolving engagement within your customer base as opposed to rapidly growing that base. And given the time and effort required to get it right, some brands might not find the payoff worthwhile.”

If you like looking at the numbers behind a trend, good news: 10 Things Marketers Need to Know About Instagram Stories from Lindsay Cosner shares some stats from Instagram themselves on Likeable Media’s blog.

“People said that they look at Instagram Stories to connect with brands they like, discover new products that are relevant to them, access tutorials on products they like or own, and find deals or special offers on brands they like. This year an impressive 69 percent of Americans use at least one social media site. A majority of these social media users report joining the sites to stay in touch with family and friends. However, Stories appears to be a place where users are seeking out branded content, offers, and product features.”

But only half of brands create a story in a given month.
